Coco vs Soil: Which Growing Medium Should You Choose?
Coco vs Soil: Which Growing Medium Should You Choose? 🌱
Choosing the right growing medium is one of the most important decisions when starting a grow. Two of the most popular choices are coco coir and soil.
Both can produce healthy, thriving plants, but they work quite differently. So, which one is right for you?
🌱 What is Soil?
Soil is the traditional choice and is often a great option for beginners. A quality soil mix can contain compost, organic matter, worm castings, perlite, vermiculite and other amendments that help create a healthy environment for plant roots.
Why choose soil?
✓ Beginner-friendly
✓ Good moisture retention
✓ Can contain nutrients and organic matter
✓ Supports beneficial microbial life
✓ Generally requires less frequent watering than coco
Good soil should also provide adequate drainage and airflow around the roots. Ingredients such as perlite are often added to improve aeration and prevent the growing medium from becoming too compact.
🥥 What is Coco Coir?
Coco coir is a growing medium made from processed coconut husks. It has become extremely popular because it provides an excellent balance between moisture retention and root-zone aeration.
Unlike nutrient-rich soil, coco contains very little nutrition of its own. This gives the grower greater control over what nutrients the plant receives.
Coco is also commonly combined with perlite. A popular option is a 70% coco and 30% perlite mix.
Why choose coco?
✓ Excellent drainage
✓ Excellent root aeration
✓ Greater control over plant nutrition
✓ Light and easy to work with
✓ Encourages strong root development when managed correctly
Because coco contains very little nutrition itself, growers need to provide an appropriate nutrient programme. Monitoring factors such as pH and EC also becomes more important.
⚖️ So, Which Should You Choose?
There's no single winner. The best choice depends on your experience and how involved you want to be in managing your plants.
Choose soil if:
You're a beginner, prefer a more forgiving growing medium, or want something that can already contain organic matter and nutrients.
Choose coco if:
You want greater control over feeding, excellent drainage and aeration, and don't mind taking a more hands-on approach to managing your plants.
🌿 What About Coco + Perlite?
If you're choosing coco, a 70/30 coco-perlite mix is a popular option.
Coco helps retain moisture, while perlite creates additional air space and improves drainage. Together, they create a light and airy environment where roots have access to both moisture and oxygen.
🌱 The Bottom Line
Both coco and soil can deliver excellent results when used correctly.
For simplicity and a more forgiving growing medium, soil is often a great place to start.
For greater control, excellent drainage and a more hands-on approach, coco may be the better choice.
Whichever you choose, remember: healthy plants start with healthy roots.
